Olga Pyleva wins the Sprint in Lake Placid

Russian Olga Pyleva shot clear today and won the Women’s 7.5 km Sprint in the time of 20:19.6 minutes. All other favorites had trouble at the shooting range despite almost perfect conditions. German Kati Wilhelm equaled her best performance of the season with second place (one error, +16.7 seconds). Anna Bogali (RUS) ranked third in the end. Like Wilhelm, she missed one of her targets, finishing 25.6 seconds behind her compatriot Pyleva.

The Women’s Sprint took place in perfect conditions in a wonderfully prepared Verizon Sports Complex. Nevertheless, only a few of the athletes managed shoot clear today. The most successful among them was Russian Olga Pyleva, who combined her flawless shooting with a solid performance on the track.

  • 15:57 CET - 2nd shoot - Pyleva (RUS) strikes all of her targets as one of the first of the favorites. She is now 9.5 seconds ahead of Wilhelm at the start of lap three.
  • 16:03 CET - Finish - Pyleva with a great finish! She gains 11 seconds on Wilhelm on the final 1.3 km and takes the lead.

German Kati Wilhelm equaled her strongest performance of the season with a second rank performance. After good results early in the season, she had been troubled by problems with her material and a poor running shape lately.

  • 15:55 CET - 2nd shoot - Wilhelm hits all five targets. Her running time is excellent today, she is 19.3 seconds ahead of Apel.
  • 16:00 CET - Finish - Wilhelm has completed her 7.5 km. Her time of 20:36.3 minutes ranks at the top for the moment.

Anna Bogali, in third position, continued her strong season. Whereas her running performance was somewhat slower than that of Wilhelm, she spent a full ten seconds less at the shooting range. In the end, she was 3.9 seconds behind the German.

  • 16:19 CET - 2nd shoot - Anna Bogali clears all five.
  • 16:26 CET - Finish - Bogali (RUS) is in third, relegates Apel to fourth position.

In the World Cup Total Score, Olga Pyleva passed Sandrine Bailly for second position. Liv Grete Poiree still ranks first, 124 points ahead of the Russian.

Pyleva makes it two in a row

After her victory in yesterday’s Sprint, Russian Olga Pyleva today won her second race in 24 hours. She was in first or second position through most of the race and defeated her closest rivals at the final shooting session, winning in the time of 31:11.3 minutes and with three shooting errors. Her compatriot Anna Bogali finished second, improving from her third place in the Sprint. She also had three errors and finished 35.4 seconds behind Pyleva. Sandrine Bailly (FRA) finished third, improving from 19th position at the start. She had just two errors and crossed the line 51.0 seconds behind Bogali.

Another beautiful day in Lake Placid – and another great performance by Olga Pyleva. The Russian seems to be enjoying herself very much in New York’s Adirondacks. Today, she recorded the second fastest course time. She was only slower than Liv Grete Poiree, but shot much better than the Norwegian. She seemed to be in control throughout the race, although she had a rather slow start.
When she missed one of her targets in the first shooting session, her closest pursuers suffered the same, but her compatriot Anna Bogali and German Katrin Apel shot clean.

  • 16:08 CET - 1st shoot - Bogali leads Pyleva and Apel (GER), Wilhelm is in fourth place, ahead of Katja Beer (also GER), who also hit all five targets.
  • 16:09 CET - 2nd lap - Apel has passed Pyleva and is on Bogali's heels.
  • 16:10 CET - 2nd lap - Pyleva can't match the speed of the two in front. She will have to hope for some errors.

On lap two, Pyleva increased her speed and stayed closely behind Apel and Bogali. They all entered the shooting range together for the second prone session.

  • 16:14 CET - 2nd shoot - Pyleva and Bogali have one error each. Apel misses two, so does Wilhelm. Dafovska moves into third place with a perfect performance.

On lap three, the two Russians increased their lead over Ekaterina Dafovska (BUL), while Liv Grete Poiree tried hard to keep her deficit as small as possible. Her ambitions for a top three finish were choked at the first standing shoot.

  • 16:20 CET - 3rd shoot - Poiree misses two and goes back onto the loop! Denkinger (GER) shoots clean and follows Bogali and Pyleva in third.

Simone Denkinger had missed one target in the first prone but had shot clean through the two following sessions. Meanwhile, Pyleva and Bogali had each missed one of their targets. On lap four, Bogali, Pyleva and Denkinger stayed closely together.

  • 16:23 CET - 4th lap - Denkiger first tries to keep contact with the Russians, all three of the will lap American Lenny Barnes soon - that'll be the end of the race for her.
  • 16:24 CET - 4th lap - Denkinger passes the Russians - will she keep calm at the range and win a first podium rank?
  • 16:24 CET - 4th lap - The three are approaching the shooting range. Who will fire the first shot?

In a finish typical for a Pursuit, the race was then decided at the final shooting session.

  • 16:26 CET - 4th shoot - All fire at once! Pyleva hits all five, Bogali misses one, Denkinger two...
  • 16:27 CET - 4th shoot - Dafovska misses two as well and falls behind.
  • 16:28 CET - 4th shoot - Sandrine Bailly (FRA) shoots clean and follows Denkinger in fourth. The gap is just seven seconds.

With five more hits, Olga Pyleva made sure of her second victory in a row. Anna Bogali was safely in second position, as all other close rivals also suffered one or several errors at the shooting range. Denkinger, however, soon felt France’s Sandrine Bailly breathing down her neck.

  • 16:29 CET - 5th lap - Looks like another fourth place for the German... Bailly is by far the stronger runner.
  • 16:30 CET - 5th lap - Bailly has caught up with Denkinger - what a duel for third!
  • 16:32 CET - 5th lap - Bailly has pulled away from Denkinger! What tragedy for the young German... This is her third fourth place finish this season.

Another 50 points for her second win in a row allowed Olga Pyleva to close the gap to Liv Grete Poiree to 105 points. With six races left and Poiree repeatedly troubled at the shooting range, the run for the Overall World Cup title has not been decided just yet. Sandrine Bailly also scored some valuable points and is still in reach of at least the runner-up position.

Poiree wins the Pursuit in Lake Placid

Frenchman Raphael Poiree won another Pursuit today after his silver medal in the same event at the World Championships in Oberhof (GER). He won in the time of 32.32.4 minutes (two errors), ahead of Russian Nikolai Krouglov, who surprised his competitors with a flawless shooting performance and a great final-lap-duel for second place against German Ricco Gross. In the end, he was 43.3 seconds behind winner Poiree and 6.7 seconds ahead of Gross, who had one error today.

Lars Berger, the winner of the Sprint, was unable to overcome his erroneous shooting today. Despite another quickest course time, his seven misses were a few too many even for the fast Norwegian.
  • 16:06 CET - 1st shoot - Berger fires first but misses his second shot... Poiree hits all five and is off with a good lead.
  • 16:08 CET - 1st shoot - It's Poiree ahead of three Norwegians, then two Germans and another Norwegian.
  • 16:09 CET - 1st shoot - If Berger can limit his errors to one in each session, he should still have a chance to win today.
Two misses in the prone had kept him in range of leader Poiree, but three errors in the first and two more in the second standing session relegated him to sixth place.

Just like Olga Pyleva in the women’s race yesterday, Raphael Poiree was also able to celebrate his victory right after he fired his final shot. While his last lap appeared to have a rather honorary character, the duel for second place between German Ricco Gross and Russian Nikolai Krouglov provided a lot of excitement. Both had cleared their final five targets in the second standing shooting session and had begun their final lap together.
  • 16:27 CET - 4th shoot - The wind has picked up again, but Poiree takes his time and shoots clean - another victory for the Frenchman, his 8th for the season.
  • 16:29 CET - 4th shoot - Bjoerndalen and Berger shoot quickly, but each miss two. Gross and Krouglov shoot clean and will duel for the rest of the podium spots.
  • 16:30 CET - 5th lap - While Poiree cruises home to an easy victory, the battle for second place is on.
Gross tried to pull away from Krouglov at the start of the lap but the Russian stayed right on his heels: “When I went onto the last loop, I felt good. I decided to stay behind Ricco and maybe go ahead at the last climb. That’s what I did and it worked.” Krouglov had previously scored a second place in the Pokljuka Pursuit, when he finished just 6.3 seconds behind winner Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (NOR). A first victory seems to be just a question of time.
  • 16:31 CET - 5th lap - Gross tries to pull away, but Krouglov won't be shaken off.
  • 16:32 CET - 5th lap - Gross with another surge at a little climb - meanwhile Poiree crosses the line.
  • 16:33 CET - 5th lap - Krouglov pulls away! The Russian passes Gross just a few hundred meters before the finish and crosses the line in second place.
With his win, Raphael Poiree increased his lead in the World Cup Total Score to 51 points. Ole Einar Bjoerndalen is second, 90 points ahead of Ricco Gross, whose third place seems quite secure for the moment.

Disl wins the Sprint

Germany’s Uschi ‘Turbo’ Disl won her second race of the season today with a rare perfect shooting performance as well as the best total course time. She crossed the finish line after 21:27.2 minutes and will have an advantage of 21.8 seconds over Liv Grete Poiree (NOR) in Friday’s Pursuit. Poiree also shot flawlessly and was the only athlete in the same league with the fast Disl today. Olga Zaitseva (RUS) in third place was a full 1:33.2 minutes behind although she also had no error at the shooting range.

In good conditions and in front of many more spectators than last week, earlier starting numbers were somewhat advantageous. Favorites Matina Glagow (GER), Olga Zaitseva (RUS), Uschi Disl (GER) and Ekaterina Dafovska (BUL) had been fortunate in the number draw and took off early. Disl immediately set the quickest intermediates.
  • 15:36 CET - 1st lap - Uschi Disl (GER) has set a first mark at the 0.8 km intermediate. She is 6.9 seconds ahead of her teammate Glagow.
  • 15:39 CET - 1st shoot - Zaitseva hits all five and goes ahead.
  • 15:40 CET - 1st shoot - Disl (GER) hits all five targets as well! That gives her a substantial lead after the first shooting session.
The German, who is shooting 75% in the prone and just 71% in the standing position this season knew that she was in for a good result as she started her second lap. It was on this lap that Disl laid the foundation to her triumph today.
  • 15:43 CET - 2nd lap - Disl is pounding the track, knowing that with another perfect shooting session, she'll have a good chance for another win, her second of the season.
At that time, no other serious contenders for the victory were on the track with the German. Russian Olga Zaitseva and German Simone Denkinger did finish in positions three and four in the end but were already a long way behind Disl halfway through the race. When she also aced her second shooting session, a first or second rank finish were a safe bet. With Pyleva and Bailly allowing themselves two errors each in the prone shooting session, it all came down to Liv Grete Poiree to challenge the German.
  • 15:48 CET - 2nd shoot - Disl clears five more! That's a podium position for sure! What a performance by the German!
  • 15:49 CET - 2nd shoot - That was the first perfect shooting for Disl this year.
  • 15:52 CET - 3rd lap - Disl passes Zaitseva on the track! That means that she has already gained 1:20 minutes on the Russian.
  • 15:55 CET - Finish - Disl in the finish! Her time: 21:27.2 minutes - That will be hard to reach for the other competitors.
Liv Grete Poiree finally arrived for her first shooting session a few minutes after Disl had crossed the line. She shot quickly and precisely and took the lead, 1.8 seconds ahead of Disl. On the second lap, however, she lost some precious time.
  • 16:00 CET - 2nd lap - At the 3.3 km intermediate, Poiree has dropped behind Disl.
  • 16:04 CET - 2nd lap - Poiree has lost some more ground. Disl's lead has increased to 11.9 seconds before the second shooting session.
Although she safely struck her targets in the standing position, she had no chance against the fast Disl, who had kept pushing very hard on the last lap in order to improve her chances for the Pursuit on Friday.

Zaitseva third, Denkinger fourth again
Simone Denkinger is getting closer and closer to a podium finish. Today, only 1.1 seconds separated her from Russian Olga Zaitseva, who profited from her better shooting. Zaitseva equaled her strongest performance of the season with her second third-place finish after the Pursuit in Hochfilzen, AUT.

In the World Cup Total Score, Poiree increased her lead over Pyleva to more than 100 points. Bailly is still third, 151 points behind the Norwegian. Disl remained in sixth position but closed the gap to Glagow in fourth to just three points.

Pyleva continues her strong finish

Olga Pyleva (RUS) continued her strong finish to the season with another win in the Sprint at the Holmenkollen. She shot clear and completed the 7.5 km in the time of 21:18.9 minutes. German Kati Wilhelm and Russian Svetlana Ishmouratova had one error each and ranked second and third. Wilhelm's gap was 31.8 seconds, Ishmouratova finished a further 9.3 seconds behind.

The first race of the season finale at was another demonstration of the excellent season-ending form of Russian Olga Pyleva. Changing conditions at the Holmenkollen, the Mecca of Nordic winter sports near Oslo, Norway, favored those athletes, who picked their numbers in starting group one. Pyleva was the first of the favorites at the shooting range…
  • 11:12 CET - 1st shoot - Pyleva (RUS) clears! That will put her name onto the top of the intermediates.
  • 11:16 CET - 1st shoot - Glagow (GER) clears and ranks second, 5.7 seconds behind Pyleva. Maybe she has regained some of her running power ...
While Pyleva was able to match her shooting with a very solid performance on the track (she recorded the fifth quickest course time), Glagow still is in a slump. The German has been unable to finish in the top ten since the World Championships in Oberhof, despite very respectable shooting performances. At the second shooting session, Pyleva continued her show …
  • 11:24 CET - 2nd shoot - Pyleva clears again! She has a 35 second advantage now. Glagow has a miss and drops behind Dafovska.
  • 11:26 CET - Finish - Pyleva crosses the line. Her 21:18.9 minutes will be hard to beat.
And they were! Several other favorites had significant problems at the shooting range today, despite a rather easy approach to the shooting range.
  • 11:18 CET - 1st shoot - Bailly (FRA) misses two targets and will have to do 300 extra meters.
  • 11:22 CET - 1st shoot - Disl (GER) misses three in the prone! That will take her out of the race for good.
  • 11:23 CET - 1st shoot - The cheers get louder ... Liv Grete Poiree is at the range! She has a miss, though and ranks third.
  • 11:31 CET - 2nd shoot - Here's Poiree! She hits three but then has two more errors for a total of three! Seems like Pyleva will be able to close the gap in the World Cup Total a little bit.
  • 11:34 CET - 2nd shoot - Apel has two errors in the standing and drops from first to fourth rank.
The next of the favorites was Glagow's teammate Kati Wilhelm. She was able to limit her number of errors to one in the prone and skied solidly today: "When I arrived at the range, the wind was relatively steady – maybe I was a little lucky there. Even after the miss, I knew that I would be able to have a good result today. My legs felt a little heavy at the end of this long season, but the others probably had the same problem."

Russian Svetlana Ishmouratova was one of the last favorites in the first starting group.
  • 11:28 CET - 1st shoot - Ishmouratova (RUS) clears and is in fourth rank after the prone session.
  • 11:36 CET - 2nd shoot - Ishmouratova hits four targets but then misses with her final shot - tough luck for the Russian. She drops to fourth position

Katrin Apel had in the meantime crossed the finishing line in third rank. She was only 12.7 seconds behind her teammate Wilhelm despite her two errors in the standing session. Katrin Apel: "Oslo is one of my favorite venues, I've never had bad results here. I found back to my running shape towards the end of the season and I'm very satisfied with fourth rank."
  • 11:41 CET - Finish - Katrin Apel is approaching the finish.
  • 11:42 CET - Finish - She is ahead of Poiree and in third rank for now ... Ishmouratova is on her last lap, though, and will probably push her off of the podium.
  • 11:43 CET - Finish - Ishmouratova splits the German couple and moves into third rank. So it's Pyleva, Wilhelm and Ishmouratova in the top three now.

And that is also how it remained. Liv Grete Poiree recorded the best course time and finished in fifth position, despite her three errors. Her 37 points were more than enough to secure her title in the World Cup Sprint Score and in the World Cup Total Score.
